Dourif was born on March 18, 1950 in Huntington, West Virginia. His mother was actress Joan Mavis Felton (née Bradford) and his father was art collector Jean Henri Dourif, who owned and operated a dye factory. In 1953, his father passed away. Golfer William C. Campbell was Dourif's stepfather.
Dourif is of French descent, since his paternal grandparents emigrated from France to Huntington. He attended Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and graduated in 1968. One year later in 1969, Dourif appeared as an amateur at the Fountain Valley Film Festival. He took second place in the 8mm film category with his 10-minute entry "Blind Date".
