Egypt (pronounced: EE-jipt, Arabic: Misr, Egyptian Arabic: Masr), officially known as the Arab Republic of Egypt (Arabic: Jumhuriyat Misr al-'Arabiyah, Egyptian Arabic: Gomhoreyyet Masr el-'Arabeyya), is a transcontinental Mediterranean country spanning the northeast region of Africa and the southwestern region of Asia by a land bridge formed by the Sinai Peninsula.
The official religion of and the most practiced in Egypt is Islam and its official language is Arabic. With over 95 million inhabitants, Egypt is the twenty-ninth-largest country in the world by area and the thirteenth-most populous. It is the most populous country in North Africa and the Arab world, the sixth-most populous in the Muslim world, and the third-most populous in Africa, after Nigeria and Ethiopia.
Egypt's capital city is Cairo, which is also the country's largest city as well, with 19.5 million inhabitants. The Greater Cairo area is not only the largest metropolitan area in Egypt, it is also the largest urban area in Africa. Egypt is borded to the northeast by the Gaza Strip and Israel, to the east by the Gulf of Aqaba, to the east and south by the Red Sea, to the south by Soudan, and to the west by Libya.
Egypt was a member of the Ottoman Empire from 1517 to 1914. It was also a member of the British Empire from 1882 to 1956. After it's fall, it became a republic. In 1958, the country merged with Syria to form the United Arab Republic, but in 1961, it was dissolved. It's current president is Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
Etymology[]
The English word Egypt comes from the Ancient Greek term Aìgyptos, via Middle French term Egypte and Latin term Aegyptus. The word was reflected in Mycenaean Greek Linear B tablets as a-ku-pi-ti-yo. The adjective aigypti-, aigyptios was borrowed into Coptic as gyptios.
From there, into Arabic as qubti.
