Biography[]

Winona Laura Horowitz, later known as Winona Ryder, was born on October 29, 1971, in Winona, Minnesota, to Cynthia Palmer (née Istas) and Michael D. Horowitz.

When she was ten, Ryder and her family moved to Petaluma, California. Later, when she was 12 years old, Ryder was enrolled in the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.

She made her film debut in the coming-of-age drama Lucas (1986). In many of her early films, she played a variety of roles. She was the eccentric, gothic Lydia in 1988's horror comedy Beetlejuice directed by Tim Burton, who recruited her after seeing her in her first film. Ryder soon appeared as teenager who falls for the unusual title character in Edward Scissorhands (1990) with then-boyfriend Johnny Depp in another film of Tim Burton.

Later Ryder starred in the dual roles of Count Dracula's reincarnated love interest Mina Murray and Dracula's past lover Princess Elisabeta, in the movie Dracula (1992), a project she brought to director Francis Ford Coppola's attention. Originally it was made for a television adaptation but Ryder liked it so much she showed the script to Coppola. The film proved later to be a critical and commercial success.

In the dark comedy Heathers (1989), she played a high school girl battling for her place in the popularity food-chain. She also played in Alien Resurrection (1997) the android Annalee. Her brother, Uri, was a major fan of the film series. That´s why, when asked, she took the role.

Ryder had a hiatus after her shoplifting incident in 2001, in which she was arrested for that, which lasted until 2005. However, since then Ryder has successfully appeared in a variety of films until the present day, including in other horror films like Frankenweenie (2012). She also appeared since 2016 in the successful scifi-horror series Stranger Things in the main role, which still continues.
