Florida (Spanish for "flowery"), also known as The Sunshine State, is the southernmost state in the southeastern region of the United States and the third most populous state in the country. It is borded to the north by Georgia, to the west by the Gulf of Mexico, to the northwest by Alabama, to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, and the Straits of Florida to the south.
Florida's most populous city is Jacksonville, which is also the largest city in the continental United States by area. Tallahassee is the capital of the state.
